The 2023 Caledonia/Spring Grove track and field boys are the sub-section team champions for the first time since 2010. Senior Tysen Grinde tied the Cal/SG high jump record while clearing 6-feet, 6-inches. Eleven Warrior boys and five girls qualified for the Section 1A Meet. The Cal/SG girls placed seventh among seven teams on May 24 at St. Charles. The boys took first-place honors in two relays and four individual events. Junior Josh Beardmore earned four championship medals and sophomore Fischer Wait three.

Cal/SG competed in Sub-section 1 among three sub-sections in Section 1A. In each event, the top eight places earned team points with the top six receiving medals. The top four places at sub-section qualified for the section meet. Individuals and relays may also advance by achieving a section standard (time, height or distance). And any athlete whose time, height or distance was among the top eight among all three sub-sections also qualified.

Beardmore won both the 100-meter dash (for the fifth time in six meets) and long jump while also running on both winning relays. Wait remained undefeated in the 200-meter dash and won the 400-meter dash for the fourth time in five meets along with a winning relay run. Grinde was the high jump champion for the sixth straight meet this season while junior Jordan Tornstrom had the best discus distance for the fourth time in five meets. Beardmore and sophomore Owen Staggemeyer ran on both winning relays. They were joined by senior Eric Mauss and junior Jason Schock on the 4×100 team and by Wait and sophomore Eli Staggemeyer on the 4x200M team.

There were several outstanding individual achievements. Among all three sub-sections, Wait had the best overall 400M time (50.64 seconds), Beardmore the best 100M time (11.23 seconds), Tornstrom the best discus distance (138 feet, 4 inches) and Grinde the best high jump (program-record 6-feet, 6-inches).

Each team could enter as many as three athletes in each individual event, and Cal/SG took the top three places in the 200M dash: Wait first, Mauss second and Owen Staggemeyer third. In high jump, Grinde and sophomore Ethan Stendel were first and second. Grinde advanced in three events, including a second-place triple jump and a fourth-place long jump.

Also qualifying for section were junior Ethan Crouch, with a third-place shot put (39 feet, 8.75 inches), and junior Mason Banse with a fourth-place in discus (119-11). In addition to the relay win, Schock qualified with a top-eight time (11.74) while placing fifth in the 100-meter dash.

For the Cal/SG girls, freshman Nicole Banse qualified for section in three events with a third-place finish at 200 meters plus two relay runs. Banse, senior Ayshia Gay and senior Charlese Walk ran on both the third-place 4×100 team and the fourth-place 4×200 relay. They were joined by senior Kloe Jore in the 4×100 and by sophomore Sienna Augedahl in the 4×200.

Also scoring team points for the Warrior girls were Gay (fifth place 100M) and Augedahl (fifth place 400M and seventh place 200M).

Also scoring team points for the Warrior boys were Mauss and senior Lyle Myhre who won fifth and sixth-place medals at 400 meters. Earning sixth-place points in the 4x400M relay were Schock, Myhre, Grinde and sophomore Sylas Flatin.

While the Warriors edged host St. Charles for the boys team trophy, the girls team champion was Lanesboro/Fillmore Central/Mabel-Canton.
