Bay City area boys track results: Standish
If Standish-Sterling's goal was to make some noise at the track and field state finals, the Panthers got what they came for.
Not only did the Panthers soar to seventh place in the team standings, they vociferously let everyone know they were in the house – courtesy of shot putter Elijah Cottrell.
"The night before, Eli said he had three goals. He wanted to get to 50 feet, he wanted to get in the Top 8 and he wanted to be the loudest screamer there – and he might have gotten all three," Standish coach Paul Walderzak said. "Like the rest of us, he was excited. Any time you end on a PR, it's a great day."
Cottrell placed eighth with a personal-best effort of 50-3 in the Division 3 finals at Kent City, helping Standish-Sterling score 21 team points on the day. And the good times kept rolling from there.
Senior Brayden Sullivan was state runner-up with a long jump of 21-8.75, missing the school record by a quarter inch, while Andrew Stewart took third in the 100 dash in 10.99, missing that record by 7-hundredths of a second.
Sullivan and Stewart combined with Aiden Coggins and Brody Sullivan to take down their own school standard while finishing third in the 4x100 relay in 43.66.
"Aiden has been great on the starts for us all year, then he gives it to another sophomore in Brody, who is just a warrior. It doesn't matter the event or the score, he gives it all," Walderzak said. "Brayden is the same way, with good speed and good strength and he runs the curve very well. Then Andrew is a little rocket."
Bay City Western junior Noah Selvaraj enjoyed an eventful day in Division 1, racing to a seventh-place showing in the 800 at 1:54.67. He was also part of the 4x400 relay that finished 23rd and the 4x800 relay that placed 30th.
The Standish-Sterling 4x100 relay team of Alex Stewart, Brayden Sullivan, Brody Sullivan and Aiden Coggins set a school record.
Thoth Moya and Co. came up big for Essexville Garber at the Division 2 final. Moya went a PR 49.57 to finish fourth in the 400 then joined the 4x200 relay that once again shattered the school record. Moya, Garrett Hayes, Brayden Tacey and Carson Madziar finished 11th in 1:30.76, bettering their record by .05 seconds. Garber also got a 15th-place finish in the 4x400 relay and a 10th-place showing from Brady McGee in discus. Another Bay County performer, Pinconning's Carson Parks, placed 21st in D3 in the long jump.
It was another banner day on the track for Clare, which flaunted its might in the relays in Division 3. The Pioneers were fronted by a runner-up finish in the 4x400 relay as Jeffrey Schafer, Owhin Thompson, Nic Porter and Karson Tocco soared from their No. 11 seed all the way to second place with a time of 3:30.00.
Clare also placed fifth in the 4x800 relay and sixth in the 4x200 relay while Brad White cut a whopping 21.18 seconds off his regional time to finish seventh in the 3200 in 9:47.11.
Four other area athletes blew away their qualifying marks to finish Top 8 as Harrison's Cameron Tigner was second in the 300 hurdles and Dalton Noble took seventh in the pole vault, Tawas’ Luke Martin placed fourth in the 400 and Reese's Beck Shores landed seventh in the high jump. Gladwin's Logan Klein did the same in Division 2 for third place in the shot put.
