Class B State Track & Field Meet sees area competitors shine

BISMARCK – The MDU Resources Community Bowl was extremely busy last weekend from Thursday, May 25 to Saturday, May 27, with both Class A and Class B combining to compete in the State Track & Field Finals. Numerous area competitors earned ribbons and some first-place finalists were among the locals excelling in the events at hand.

The Class B meet saw some fine performances from an abundance of regional competitors with Bowman County continuing its excellent 2023 season and earning second in the boys meet on 101 points and fourth in the girls meet with 38 total. Dickinson Trinity also turned in a solid meet with 32 points and sixth place for the boys team.

Trinity took fifth-place in the 100m dash with Isaak Kudrna's time of 11.35 and Luke Shobe finished just behind Kudrna's seventh-place 23.16 in the 200m dash with a 23.53 and eighth-place. In the preliminaries for the two events, other area state qualifiers who didn't make the finals included Killdeer's Dayne Dorval and Ethan Hendrickson who ran a 16th-place and a 24th-place, respectively, in the 100m dash and Jake Shobe, who turned in a 19th-place finish for Trinity in the 200m dash.

In the 200m dash for the girls event, Adyson Gerbig was fourth overall with a 25.56.

On the girls side, local state qualifiers who didn't make the finals included Helena Pavek's 11th-place time of 12.89 in the 100m and Bowman County's Quin Andrews, who turned in a 26.7 for 10th-place in the 200m, followed by Heart River's Ava Walter at 16th.

In the 400m dash, Pavek was ninth for Trinity with a 1:00.85 and Shobe came in fourth in the event with a 51.37. Hettinger County's Sophie Olsonawski didn't make the finals but ended up in 11th-place, while for the boys Tallen Binstock was 17th for HCHS and Hendrickson was 19th for Killdeer in the event while Jake Shobe was 21st.

Bowman County's Taylor Wanner came in first in the 800m run/dash with a time of 1:57.84, while his teammates were bang, bang, bang, bang just behind him at fourth-through-seventh in the event. Jonah Njos was fourth in 2:00.39, while Austin Wanner notched a time of 2:00.72, Caleb Sarsland was in with a 2:00.91 and Gavin Lambourn took seventh in 2:02.21 for the Bulldogs. Hettinger County's Matt Huether was in 14th in the event.

For the girls 800m, Killdeer's Addie Miller was fourth in the state at 2:22.14 and Jaci Fischer was just behind her at 2:23.56 for Bowman County, while Sophie Olsonawski came in 11th for Hettinger County and her teammate Jazlyn Ottmar was 17th in the event.

For the girls in the 1600m run, Miller was seventh with a 5:26.22 for BCHS and Bowman County's Fischer was eighth with a 5:28.22. Other area placers included Hettinger County's Ruby Nasset, who was 11th in the event and Bowman County's Kenley Bowman, who was 12th.

Taylor Wanner also earned the blue-ribbon in the 1600m run with a 4:20.56 for the Bulldogs, while Austin Wanner was third in the event with a 4:22.83 and Caleb Sarsland followed him with a fourth-place 4:28.62 and Njos came in fifth at 4:31.84. Trinity's Jace Cofer was in at 11th with a 4:39.49 and Lambourn was 14th in the event for BCHS.

Austin Wanner took first-place in the 3200m run at 9:38.19, while Caleb Sarsland was in second at 9:39.94 and Njos was sixth with a 10:05.9 and Lambourn was 11th with a time of 10:34.17. Other area finishers were Trinity's Cofer at 15th, Gabe Sarsland at 19th and Warner Bowman at 28th for Bowman.

Killdeer's Isaac Jaggi was the top area competitor in the 110m hurdles with a 16th-place effort, while Rigo Lopez came in 18th for Trinity in the event.

In the 300m hurdles, Adyson Gerbig was fourth with a time of 46.25 for the Bulldogs and her teammate Andrews was in eighth at 47.49 and Sophia Headley from Bowman County in 10th at 47.91. For the boys side, Bennett Jorgenson from Hettinger-Scranton was 13th in the event.

In the 4x100m relay, the boys team of Nathan Dix, Bishop and Bohden Duffield and Roman Fossum turned in a fifth-place 44.73 for Bowman County, while Killdeer's team of Gus Bohmbach, Hendrickson, Cayden Neurohr and Dorval were in at ninth with a 50.84. Dickinson Trinity ended up in 18th place in the prelims in the event. On the girls side, no area schools made the finals, but Hettinger-Scranton was 15th and Trinity was 23rd in the event, while Bowman County was 27th.

Bowman County took first in the 4x200m relay with the team of Adyson and Landyn Gerbig, Headley and Andrews charting a 1:45.02, while Trinity's team of Serenity Pavlicek, Kate Glaser, Anna Clifton and Helena Pavek was sixth with a 1:48.20. Heart River was 21st in the prelims and didn't make the finals. The boys 4x200m relay team of Gage Glaser, Kudrna, Luke and Jake Shobe was fourth with a 1:31.85 in the event, while Killdeer was 13th and Bowman County was 23rd.

In the 4x400m relay, Bowman County took second for the boys with the team of Nathan Dix, Bishop & Bohden Duffield and Taylor Wanner turning in a time of 3:30.51, while Adyson & Landyn Gerbig, Headley and Jaci Fischer were third for the girls from the Bulldogs with a 4:08.61 in the event. Hettinger County ended up at ninth for the boys, with Killdeer 10th and Trinity in 16th, while for the girls Killdeer was 11th, trinity was 14th and Hettinger County was 19th.

Bowman County's 4x800m relay team of Lambourn, Austin & Taylor Wanner and Caleb Sarsland were in first-place with a time of 8:01.9 for the boys and Trinity's team of Cofer, Max Lefor, Joel Thorson and Eli Hansen were fourth with an 8:31.77. Hettinger County came in eighth in the event. On the girls side, Hettinger County's team of Olsonawski, Ottmar, Carly Wolf and Ruby Nasset were fourth in a time of 9:59.66, while Bowman County's team of Landyn Gerbig, Kenley Bowman, Julie Sarsland and Fischer were in fifth at 10:01.77 and Killdeer's squad of Abby Hardersen, Taylee Andersen, Mickellyn Walker and Addie Miller were sixth with a time of 10:06.9. Trinity finished in 11th place in the 4x800m relay.

For the field events, Eastyn Gebhardt was fourth in the shot-put for Richardton-Taylor with a mark of 36’9" and Hunter Rassmussen was sixth with a 49’10.5" mark for Bowman County.

Mace Stuber was 18th in the discus from Bowman County , while teammates Grant Kees and Rassmusses were 20th and 26th, respectively. Killdeer's Gracie Doe was tops among area competitors in the discus at 15th place, while Trinity's Melissa Zach was in 19th in the event.

In the javelin, Bohmbach threw a fourth-place 164’6" and Heart River's Jayden Bailey was eighth with a 156’11" effort, while Cole Manolovits was 17th for Hettinger County. Richardton-Taylor's Evelyn Kuntz was tops among area competitors in the girls event at 18th, while Hettinger County's Samantha Greff was 20th.

Four area competitors tied at 11th for the girls high-jump, with Killdeer's Madeline Lambert, Bowman County's Avrie Nohava and Addie Umbreit and Hettinger County's Anna Nasset all marking a 4’10", while on the boys side Killdeer's Michael Cattoor came in 14th in the event.

The pole-vault was won by a pair of Dickinson Trinity competitors in Gage Glaser and Anna Clifton, who leaped 13’3" and 10’3", respectively. For the boys, Killdeer's Bohmbach was third at 12’9" and Cattoor was 13th, while for the girls Danielle Dobitz placed third with a 10’ mark and Bowman County's Julie Sarsland was tied at fifth with a mark of 9-feet even. Josey Andersen was eighth for Killdeer in the event.

In the long-jump, Headley and Andrews turned in 10th and 11th for Bowman County and Heart River's Abby Talkington was 14th for Heart River tied with Ellie Powell of Bowman County and just ahead of Juliet Redka for Richardton-Taylor for 16th and Landyn Gerbig at 17th. Avrie Nohava placed 23rd for Bowman County and Hettinger County's Sophie Johnson was 23rd. On the boys side, Bohden Duffield was fifth in the event for BCHS with a mark of 21’1.25" and his brother Bishop took seventh with a 20’11" effort. Trinity's Gage Glaser was in at 25th place and Hettinger County's Manolovits was 28th in the event.

In the triple-jump, Hettinger County's Anna Nasset was fourth overall with a mark of 34’6.5" and Nohava finished at 17th for Bowman County and Talkington was 21st for Heart River. The boys side saw Bishop Duffield earn a ninth-place 41’8.5" and Bohden Duffield took 12th with Manolovits earning 24th for Hettinger County.
