High school track: Tewksbury, Wilmington and Dracut relay teams shine
ROXBURY — Six local track and field teams competed Friday night at the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association's 54th annual James Kalperis Division 4 State Relay Meet at the Reggie Lewis Center.
The Tewksbury, Wilmington and Dracut boys and girls teams all competed. Tewksbury and Wilmington finished in a tie for eighth place in the girls division and the Tewksbury boys also finished in eighth.
The Tewksbury girls were led by the foursome of Emma Jensen, Jayani Santos, Cassidy Paige and Kimsan Nguyen, who were grouped together twice to finish third in the 4×200 (1:49.58) and fourth in the 4×50 (25.72) to account for all of the team's points.
On the boys side, three teams placed in the top six. The shot put trio of Kyle Adams, Kodie LeGrand and Anthony Nahgibi were second, throwing a combined 119 feet, 4 inches. Then in the running events, the distance medley team of Nick Alvarado, King Shakes, Steven Oppedisano and Will Eskenas were fourth at 11:34.27 and then Eskenas and Alvarado joined up with Nate Laboy and Austin Mannetta to place sixth in the 4×800 in a time of 8:43.48.
The Wilmington girls placed in two events, the high jump and the 4×50 shuttle dash. The high jump trio of Mollie Osgood, Kayla Flynn and Alexis Melvin were second with a mark of 14-03, including Osgood clearing 5-3, which tied a school record. The 4×50 team was fifth in 25.92 behind the efforts of Alison Doherty, Emily Grace, Emily Doherty and Molly MacDonald.
The Wilmington boys had three teams that placed. The high jump trio of Sean Patrone, Hunter Sands and Owen Mitchell finished third as they combined to clear 15-11. Both the distance medley and the 4×100 shuttle hurdle teams finished sixth. The medley team consisted of Mitchell along with Gavin Dong, Roman Moretti and Dean Ciampa as they came in at 12:13.24. Then the hurdle team had Sands, Patrone, Mitchell and Cooper Loisel and they had a combined time of 30.64 seconds.
For Dracut, the boys 4×50 dash team was third in 22.51 behind the efforts of Sam Botsis, AJ D’Agostino, Nick Grier and Adi Soucy, while the 4×200 team was sixth in 1:36.09 thanks to Botsis, D’Agostino, Shawn Panfil and Soucy.
On the girls side, the sprint medley team was fourth in 4:37.62 thanks to Serine Boumedien, Lindsay Grier, Maddie Maier and Sabrina Vitale. The shuttle hurdles and 4×200 teams were sixth with respective times of 34.73 and 1:36.09.
The shuttle hurdle team consisted of Grier, Kat Martel, Kate Renard and Abby Gitau. The 4×200 team was represented Martel, Gitau, Charlotte McIntosh and Grier.
